The Right Stuff
When the Russians successfully sent their satellite Sputnik into the skies, the
United States panicked -- and quickly launched a space program of its own. "The Right
Stuff" takes a piercing look at the lives of the astronauts who participated in this
space race, and who, with the help of the media and the government, became the nation's
heroes. On one hand this is the story of how America came from behind to dominate the
field of space exploration. But it also paints a portrait of a period in which America
wanted to believe in perfect men and their perfect wives... even if the reality was vastly
more complex. |

Twelve O'Clock
High (1949)
This film stars Gregory Peck in one of his finest performances as a callous general
who assumes command of a bomber squadron based in England. At first, the new commander has
little rapport with the 918th Bomber Group, whose loyalties still belong with their
previous commander. As they continue to fly dangerous mission over Germany, however, the
group and their new leader develop mutual respect and admiration, until the once-alienated
commander feels that his men are part of a family--men whose bravery transcends the rigors
of rigid discipline and by-the-book leadership. The film's now-classic climax, in which
the general waits patiently for his squad to return to base--painfully aware that they may
not return at all--is one of the most subtle yet emotionally intense scenes of any World
War II drama |

excellent photography. Your aviation video library will not be complete without this fine
piece of work. |

In Harm's Way
(1965)
Starring: John Wayne, Kirk Douglas
Otto Preminger's sprawling WWII drama packs a lot in its 165 minutes, beginning
with the attack on Pearl Harbor (which Preminger re-creates in amazing detail) and ending
a couple of years later with America's return to the South Pacific in force. John Wayne
and Kirk Douglas star as a career naval captain and his self-pitying commander in the
peacetime navy who are thrust into battle when Pearl Harbor is bombed while they are on
maneuvers. Cast includes a classic line up of stars. |

TORA! TORA!
TORA! (1970)
Created by both Japanese and American filmmakers, "Tora! Tora! Tora!"
examines Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. The film first details the days leading up
to the event, starting in 1939, when Germany invaded Poland and the fear of an attack on
the U.S. by the Axis Powers began to grow. Miscalculations by both the American and
Japanese military are explored from each side's point of view. The movie then climaxes
with a spectacularly-staged, realistic re-creation of the Pearl Harbor attack. |
